Mobile & Internet TV

I report on the fast changing world of TV, broadcasting and video distribution for a variety of specialist magazines including New Video technology, IPTV News Analyst and Cable & Satellite International. I specialise particularly in TV on mobile handheld devices, and on the growing phenomenon of IPTV, which is the use of Internet technologies for distributing video. The rapid emergence of video sharing sites such as YouTube is transforming the way video and TV programmes are watched, with the big changes being the disintegration of fixed viewing schedules (linear TV) and the blurring of the distinction between broadcaster and consumer. In the new world of TV, people increasingly watch when and where they want, without being tied to the living room or the published programme guide. More people are producing their own programmes and even attracting paid advertising to them, creating a new cottage industry of producers. I cover the technology behind these trends and assess the changing content of programming. I also examine the challenges for the players involved, including consumers, broadcasters, telecommunications/mobile operators, and content producers including Hollywood studios.
